Site Launch: Office of Development and Alumni Affairs

Old Giving Web siteNew Giving Web site

Giving back is what it’s all about. The Office of Development and Alumni Affairs goal is to facilitate these gifts. Their old homepage was not doing much as far as a call to action was concerned. A potential donor was confronted with a large photo, which was nice,  but then to the left was a large list of menu items and to the right was a small paragraph, logo and “click here” link. We decided to change the whole experience.

New Site Features

  • We took the site and broke the navigation into three areas: why give, type of giving and housekeeping items. This gives the user a clear distinction where to look.
  • In addition, we kept the large photo but changed it to feature students and a “Giving” reinforcement line.
  • We added a direct and easy to remember phone number to the header to give the prospective donor piece of mind that they can talk to someone if needed.
  • Lastly, a Donor and Student Spotlight section has been added to highlight people just like you are I,  who have helped shape the future and who’s future has been shaped.

The coloring of the site was updated from burgundy to the Wayne State green to better reinforce the printed and digital materials prospective donors will get. We also increased the width to our 900px standard, allowing for more breathing room and promotion. Overall, we didn’t dramatically increase or decrease the number of pages on the site, just reorganized and centralized the look to match the university.

This is a very nicely designed site, but I’m curious why advancement and alumni are always conflated. I understand they may be the same office internally but to the user these are two different mindsets (acting as a donor vs connecting as an alum).

Well we do have two separate offices. http://alumni.wayne.edu/ is our Alumni Association which is concerned with building relationships between alumni and the university. Right now their relationship is loose but development does rely heavily on contacting and working with alumni.
