Word Warriors Web Site Launch
We just launched a completely new web site that strives to bring back great words. The site is called Word Warriors and it is in contrast to the Lake Superior State yearly list of banished words. We are looking for user submitted words and allow users to vote on the current word list. There is a word of the week and every year we will release a list of words that should be used more.
It has been a week since the launch of the site, usually I would write about the launch sooner but the response after launch day was so great we had to get to work on some optimization to handle the load.
First Week Stats

The first launch day was the Monday back from New Years vacation, the story went AP and traveled all over the world. We were super excited, but on Tuesday the site really got picked up by some high traffic web sites and was featured on the Detroit News and Free Press homepages. At one point we were getting 1500+ visitors an hour.
As you can see the traffic has dropped off from the initial launch but we are still holding strong at ~200 visitors per day. Here are some stats on the words to date:
- 560 Total Words Submitted
- 264 Words Open for Voting
- 236 Users Registered
- 2200 Votes Cast
Creating a Community
Unlike a department on campus this site is targeted to anyone who is interested in words or the English language. This allowed us to extend the interaction of the site outside the wayne.edu domain. In addition to the standard updating via RSS we also created and support a Twitter account (@wordwarriors) and Facebook page.
The response on these networks was well received. It has become a community of word lovers and we hope to inspire and contribute to this community in the months and years to come.

Those are some amazing results! A lot of sites wouldn’t get those type of results in a full year let alone the first week. Well done.
